I stayed overnight on November 12, 2025, and loved it. The massage was the best I’ve had in Japan, even after getting several in Tokyo and other cities. Definitely book one. The woman working there was very helpful and spoke excellent English. She also helped me find a dinner spot and called to check that I could go. I chose this onsen because it’s part of both the Kyushu 88 Hot Springs Tour and 88 Beppu Hot Springs. It’s a 12-minute walk from Beppu Stn. and three minutes from the nearest 711. You can reserve the onsen for private use in one-hour slots, which seemed a bit annoying at first, but the baths were usually free and I managed to go several times without a problem. The cost performance is amazing. I’ll stay here again when I visit Beppu.

It’s close to the sea, though there’s no direct view of it. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the place feels welcoming. Rooms and facilities are aged, but nothing was missing that would have made the stay feel luxurious. You can choose from three different private onsens and use them multiple times a day without an extra charge 🤩.

I came to use the onsen, not to stay at the ryokan. There are several rooms where you can bathe privately. In the cave room the water runs quite hot, but there’s a cold-water hose to bring the temperature down. Shampoo and soap are provided. The onsen is much like the ones farther up in the mountains, but more convenient. I think it’s worth a try if you’re visiting Beppu.
