🦅 Washio★Jiro's "Hotels I've Stayed In" Series Vol. 6 [Betsukai] My navigation took me up a dark mountain road with no streetlights, even though I'd pictured Betsukai Park Hotel as a seaside place. I wondered if I'd gone the wrong way, but eventually reached the hotel. "Park Hotel" sounded like a fancy city hotel to me, though it turned out to be more of a small business inn. 😅 Betsukai is in eastern Hokkaido by the Sea of Okhotsk. It's the prefecture's second-largest town, about the size of Tokyo's 23 wards, and a dairy area with more than five times as many cows as people. The hotel seems to date from the 1980s. It's a compact, three-story building with 19 rooms, a homey feel, and what looks like accommodation for both long-term and group stays. The rooms are Japanese-style, like a traditional inn. From here it's about a 30-40 minute drive to Nakashibetsu, Shibecha, and Teshikaga, making it handy as a sightseeing base in eastern Hokkaido. The staff were very helpful. I stayed on March 23, 2023.

I ended up staying here because hotels in Nakashibetsu are often full. There are restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The public bath isn't a hot spring, but the mugwort bath is a nice way to relax. I appreciated how friendly and helpful the hotel staff were.
The large public bath, "Yomogi no Yu," is great for easing away the day's tiredness, and Betsukai Town Railway Memorial Park is just a one-minute walk away if you want to see the history of the Shibetsu Line. The president's whimsical diary on the official website is a fun read. I'd highly recommend this hotel when staying in western Betsukai Town.
The staff were kind and helpful, and they gave us milk as a little service. Beer and water were also available. The building felt a bit old, but the room was reasonably clean and did the job for a business trip. The women's large bath closed around 8 PM, so I didn't get to try the mugwort bath.
The room was nice and clean. As others have mentioned, there's no elevator, but it wasn't much of an issue.
