Adagio Villa

The nature here is what stayed with me: birdsong in the morning, leaves rustling down, and that clean forest smell. There are lovely little scenes everywhere, especially the path lined with white locust trees, which felt so peaceful and romantic. Adagio Hokkaido Auberge Adagio is a small group of five cottages joined by winding paths. The design has a rustic feel while still showing care for the surrounding landscape. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was warm and sincere. We were lucky enough to see snow during our two nights at Adagio Hokkaido, and the scenery changed completely overnight. It was a great stay. I'd like to come back in summer for the flower fields.

We missed out on dinner because we hadn't booked it ahead, and there aren't many dinner options in Biei. Still, the stay was peaceful, and breakfast each morning was enjoyable. We had a room in the main hotel with one double bed and one single. The coffee in the room and the CD player were nice little touches, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The villas are bizarre, with steep, narrow steps and several levels, and I slept on a fold-out futon. One window had no curtain. For the price, I found it awful and uncomfortable. They kindly let me move to a room in the main house, which was much better, but its bed was basically a metal spring box with no padding. It needs a proper mattress or even a topper. Breakfast also wasn't for me: mostly a pale-looking piece of pork with lettuce, an orange slice, and a little soup. This was easily the worst place I stayed in Hokkaido. As a Westerner, I'd avoid it if you can.
