After a few weeks on the road, we could really unwind here. The architecture is gorgeous, and our room was spacious and spotless. We stayed two nights, and this ended up being one of the best parts of our Japan trip. Dinner and breakfast were served as courses, and both were a highlight. It was my first introduction to traditional Japanese food, and I loved every bit of it. Everything was beautifully arranged and incredibly tasty. The staff were so kind and attentive, taking care of the details and making it easy to enjoy our stay. We didn't book a room with a private Onsen, but the public bath inside the hotel was more than enough for us. It has an onsen, sauna, and cold plunge, and you can take in the surrounding nature while soaking. A wonderful place to stay, and one I'd happily recommend. They live up to their high standards and award-winning reputation.

The staff were welcoming from the moment we parked, and although the building is older, it's been kept in excellent shape and felt clean and comfortable. We stayed for two nights in early October, and this was the most satisfying part of our trip. Our room's private onsen was a real treat. We could soak whenever we wanted, looking out at the forest without worrying about anyone else. The meals were another standout. Dinner and breakfast came in courses, with delicious, nicely presented dishes and portions that left room for dessert. Privacy screens between the dining tables made meals comfortable. They also have a good sake list. We tried the Hokkaido-limited Kokushi Musou Junmai Daiginjo and Taisetsu Junmai Ginjo, and both went well with the food. A couple of small things: the in-room fridge wasn't very powerful and the TV was small, but neither got in the way of our stay. I also liked that extras were paid together at checkout. For a peaceful, high-quality stay in Biei, I'd recommend it.

The shower was the biggest frustration: it only runs for 30 seconds after you press a button, so I had to push it about ten times just to shower. I've never had that at a hotel, especially one in this price range. For what I paid, I expected luxury, but it felt like a standard ryokan with older rooms. There wasn't even a thermostat.

The setting is beautiful and the location is great, but what really made our two-night stay the best experience we've had in Japan was the wonderful staff and truly amazing food. We'll definitely return!

Our winter stay in Hokkaido was a wonderful experience. The service was attentive, the food amazing, and the onsen bath felt surreal. We'll definitely come back.
