The staff were really friendly, and I had fun chatting with them and the other guests. The hostel is also close to a few bus stations, which was handy. I could drop off my luggage before check-in, and they kindly accepted my large suitcase when it was delivered. The rooms were what you’d expect in a hostel, but still nice to stay in. It was quiet after 10 p.m., and the beds were comfortable. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and worked well, and there’s a washing machine plus a kitchen area you can use for free.

The good points were the strong WiFi, decent cleanliness, and free laundry. Still, the building’s basic problems make it hard for me to recommend. It’s a traditional wooden place that might seem authentic and cool to younger visitors on their first trip to Japan, but if you need a quiet night, staying here could be a struggle. The building felt noisy and shaky, and guests didn’t seem able to follow the simple quiet-after-10 p.m. rule. People stomped across the tatami, used the microwave, came in and out again and again, rustled zippers and plastic bags at 3 a.m., did laundry, and took calls without trying to keep the noise down. Sleeping before midnight felt like a distant dream. Earplugs barely helped when the microwave was humming just beyond a paper-thin wall, and there didn’t seem to be any staff on-site at night to enforce the rules. The place also felt a bit overpriced. The fridge could be bigger. The mixed dorm has eight beds, and I’d guess there are more than ten guests if you include the women’s dorm, but the fridge is only a minibar-sized cube. It was practically full after I put in three oranges.

We stayed in a private room, and it would have been fine if the listing had made the setup clearer. On booking.com it mentioned things like a balcony, views, and towels, but it wasn’t clear that these weren’t in the room. Towels cost extra, and the bathroom is shared. The information seemed misleading, though probably unintentionally.

The staff were very friendly, and the location worked well for me. I managed to get everywhere I wanted on foot. There weren’t many guests around, which made for a warmer atmosphere, and I found the beds comfortable despite what some comments say. The showers could use better insulation. I was there in winter and felt cold when I got out.

What makes this tiny place special is the atmosphere. I finally felt like I was in a real hostel, with people actually talking instead of keeping to themselves in a cheap dorm. The staff were great and very helpful, and spoke perfect English. The other guests were fun to hang out with, and I’ll probably leave with some new friends, mostly Korean ones. I loved the rice straw smell of the tatami in the dorm too. It’s an old traditional house, so don’t expect much room to move around or fancy equipment, though it’s more than fancy enough. I spent a few days at Fukuoka Guesthouse Ship and loved it.
