The location works if you don’t mind a walk. Hakata Station is about 10 minutes away with luggage, but it’s on the far side of the station, so Canal City and the Aeon Express supermarket take around 25 minutes on foot. The lobby makes a strong impression, with tall bookshelves, comfortable lounge seating and a well-chosen collection of Japanese books. It’s very photogenic, and the cone-shaped lobby ceiling is an interesting feature. Guest rooms occupy the circular tower. Staff were generally helpful with luggage storage before and after checkout, and called a taxi to the airport for us, though a warmer greeting would have improved the experience. Rooms are basic and small. The bookshelf wallpaper gives them some character, but the design could be better even with the circular layout. Ventilation could improve, and the rooms could smell fresher. They provide a humidifier instead of the air purifier many hotels have. The bathroom is cramped, and the toilet and bath area could be separated better. One room had a noticeable urine and mould smell while showering, perhaps from the curtain or walls, which affected the feeling of comfort and cleanliness.

The lounge was decent but sparse, with a range of alcohol, soft drinks including Evian and Perrier, and okay snacks. The location is manageable for younger, able-bodied guests, but it’s not especially close to Hakata Station, so older people may want to stay nearer. The room we booked was fairly spacious and opened onto a view of the lobby when you stepped out. It was the upgraded room with lounge access, not the lowest tier. The bathroom smelled a little, and the water pressure was weak. Apart from the nice lobby and decent room, don’t expect much. The service was the worst we’ve had in Japan. Even at a three-star hotel at best, we’ve had better service from Japanese business hotels than at The Basics. The front desk staff were curt and a bit rude, with little basic omotenashi. I saw other Google reviews saying the same.

The lobby’s Christmas decorations were beautiful, and the soft jazz made the festive space feel especially relaxing. We had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Basics Fukuoka. Our room was spacious, luxurious and extremely comfortable. The hotel is also conveniently located, just a seven-minute walk from Hakata Station, making it easy to get around the city.

We were there for seven nights. The room wasn’t as impressive as the lobby, but it was spacious and comfortable, and the bathroom was roomy by Japanese standards. Staff were friendly and patient with our needs. Their English was limited, which made communication a little difficult, but they made an effort to help. Getting around was convenient: Hakata Station connects to Fukuoka International airport and, by subway, places like Dazaifu, Tenjin and Daimyo. Family Mart and Lawson stores along the walk back to the hotel were handy for picking up essentials. My only complaints were that the bath towels were tiny and the hair dryer wasn’t powerful enough to dry long hair quickly.

The first night was rough. I could feel the bed springs through the thin mattress, and even stacking four limp pillows didn’t help. The room layout could be better too. There’s only a small round table, with nowhere convenient to put luggage or eat. I told the staff about the bed, and although they couldn’t move me to another room, they responded quickly and willingly. They added a layer of protection and replaced the pillows. Apart from that response and the beautiful lobby, there isn’t much that sets this hotel apart. It’s a 10-minute walk from Hakata Station. There are better choices, or you can just visit for a lobby photo if that’s what you’re after.
