The check-in was thoughtful and thorough. The butler, who I think was named Junko, took about 30 minutes to explain the room, amenities, and house rules. English was limited, so she used picture cards and translation tools, and everything was clear and easy to follow. We stayed during heavy snowfall last week, and choosing this ryokan worked out perfectly. The room was cozy and clean, with a lovely ocean view. The furnishings aren’t modern, but they’re well maintained and fully functional, and give the place a feel of stepping back into the 80s or 90s. Heating kept us comfortable even with temperatures around -5 to -10 degrees. The bedding was set out during dinner and folded away again at breakfast, which made us feel very well cared for. We’d ordered dinner and breakfast through Trip.com and requested a beef and crab set ahead of time, which they accommodated. The portions were generous. The food may not be top-tier, but it was better than at many ryokans I’ve stayed in. There’s a private onsen, free for the first 45-minute use, with a charge for later sessions. It closes daily at 10 a.m. for cleaning. The ryokan is in Yunokawa Onsen, about 30 minutes from town. I’d recommend eating in, since going out means a walk, and staying in lets you enjoy the experience fully. It was a very pampering stay, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a five-star-level ryokan experience.

The onsens were amazing and really revitalizing, and we had a relaxing, wonderful weekend. The staff at Wakamatsu took such good care of us. They were all kind and helpful, arranged taxis, and recommended things to do around town. We’re very grateful for their hospitality.

The view was incredible. Lying in bed felt like being on a cruise ship in the clouds, and the ocean was lovely to look at. The staff were accommodating, even with my nonexistent Japanese and the occasional etiquette slip despite my best efforts. The woman who checked me in was very nice. I had dinner and breakfast, and was impressed by the food, its presentation, and the service. The woman serving me explained each dish in English and made sure I had everything I needed. The onsens were wonderful too, just the kind of respite you hope for at a ryokan. Thanks for a great stay!

The chef personally chooses the ingredients, and the seafood stands out at Kappo Ryokan Wakamatsu, which sits by the sea in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Its meals draw on seasonal produce from Hokkaido and nearby areas, with sashimi among the fresh seafood served. The ryokan is known for its cuisine and has a star in the Michelin Guide for Hokkaido. It serves kaiseki, a multi-course meal that balances taste, texture, and appearance. The cooking and presentation follow the tea ceremony’s “three ki” spirit of hospitality, taking account of the season, the vessel, and the occasion.
