8/10

I liked the quiet feel of the place, which somehow seemed both new and traditional. The heated tatami floors were a nice touch, and the room had a 3D shower, Dyson hair dryer, and foot massager. The reserved bath was great. The public bath is small, though I happened to have it to myself. Breakfast was especially good; dinner was sukiyaki or shabu-shabu, which was about what I expected. For the price, I wish meals could be served in the room. The room tub used bath salts, which was disappointing, and the uphill walk from the bus stop was tiring. Management seemed to be making a real effort to have English-speaking staff, but I would have liked the option of Japanese-speaking staff too. The food explanations were only a few simple words, which didn't do justice to the quality.

That uphill walk from the bus stop is no joke. It took us about ten minutes, and even as two reasonably fit guys we struggled in the spring sun. If you have luggage or aren't up for a steep climb, take the free shuttle. We didn't leave to explore until checkout because even thinking about the walk put us off. Still, the place was so comfortable and luxurious that staying in felt easy. The room was lovely, the scenery was beautiful, and the private bath made a nice extra alongside the public onsen. Staff were exceptional, the food was generous and delicious, and the woman who greeted us set the tone for a perfect stay. We also liked the piano in the lounge, the free chocolates, and having private rooms for meals. And I wouldn't mind another of that craft Belgian White ale. We wished we could stay there permanently.

The care showed up in every little detail, including a late trip to the pharmacy. I needed to go after hours, and they drove me there in their private car even though it was late. The service was outstanding throughout. Meals came in a private, luxurious room separate from the bedroom, and the food was the best I had during my two weeks in Japan: A5 steak, lovely fruit and vegetables, all of it. The onsens were great, and with so few people at the hotel I never saw anyone in them, even the public baths. It was peaceful, quiet, and traditional. You just don't get this kind of service in the USA, whatever you pay.

The quiet setting and traditional meals gave me a cultural experience that's hard to find elsewhere. It's a very exclusive hotel, and the service and amenities were a great experience. If it fits your budget, I'd say it's worth considering.
