I’d definitely recommend this place. It’s a sweet little family-run inn that makes a nice break from the cities, and there’s a bus stop right nearby so getting there doesn’t involve much walking. The owner greeted me and showed me around, and the family’s grandma was the cutest. I’d brought a ridiculous pile of check-in luggage, which was pretty funny in hindsight. The owner helped arrange delivery to our next hotel. Both the owner and grandma speak fluent English, so everything went smoothly. I went to the hot spring twice a day. You reserve a time slot, and we had no trouble getting one. There are clean, relaxing indoor and outdoor baths. We’d paid for breakfast each day, a Western-style spread of toast, cereal, fruit, yogurt, egg salad, coffee, and tea. On checkout day I’d forgotten we’d paid, but the grandma still prepared breakfast for us. Such a kind gesture.

The room was a lovely traditional Japanese space, but had modern air conditioning and heating, and the comfy mattresses let us sleep really well. We came to Hakone overnight as a couple, and it ended up being the highlight of our two-week holiday. We booked Fuji-Hakone guest house because both private onsens, indoors and outdoors, welcome guests with tattoos. The baths were wonderful, and we spent a lovely evening soaking outside under a clear, starry sky. Our host was incredibly friendly and made us feel at home. He was also great at Kendama and gave me some useful pointers. I can’t wait to come back.

The hot springs were a lovely extra, but what really made the stay was Ted’s kindness and hospitality. He made us feel so welcome and added so much to our trip. Our accommodation was beautiful and felt authentic, with a lovely river view where deer came by in the early mornings. The location worked well too, with a bus stop just around the corner for easy trips to Lake Ashi.

Such a quiet, lovely place. The owners have been running this adorable guest house since the 80s and were so kind, making us feel completely welcome. We had a wonderful time in the private outdoor onsen.

The private onsen was incredibly relaxing, and the people at Fuji-Hakone guesthouse were welcoming about tattoos. They even asked me about a couple of mine. I’d worried that hard-to-hide tattoos would mean missing out on trying an onsen in Japan, so that meant a lot. The location and host were fantastic. Sharing a couple of games and knowledge with our host was a lot of fun, and I felt so welcome the whole time. A five-star experience. Next time I’m in Japan, I’ll stay longer than one night.
