The family running Bettei Fujiya made us feel relaxed and cared for, and it’s a quick trip from Hiroshima. The grounds and buildings are beautiful, with private onsens, soaking tubs in the rooms, and places to wander. We’d seen the lovely website, but it didn’t prepare us for how warmly they welcomed us or how quickly they felt like friends. They were so excited to share their delicious, distinctive local Hiroshima food, served irori style. We heard that foreign visitors are rare. We found the place through a random Reddit comment, and they used a handheld translation device throughout our stay to bridge the language gap. They’re ready to meet you halfway and offer such warm hospitality. They’ve made something special here, and I hope they continue to do well and welcome many more kind foreign visitors.

On my second visit, I chose a second-floor room after staying in a maisonette last time. The room was spacious, clean, and stylish, and soaking in the Shigaraki ceramic bath with the outside view and hot spring water felt luxurious. The service was impeccable; all the staff were friendly and easy to talk with, and the owner knows a lot about alcohol and suggested plenty to try. Of the all-inclusive places I’ve stayed, this had by far the best alcohol selection. You can also take snacks, sweets, cheese, instant noodles, and other soft drinks to your room. Since my previous visit, the dog run has doubled in size, barbecues are now allowed, and there’s a microwave in the room. They clearly think about guests and their dogs. The meals aren’t extravagant, but the hearth-grilled meat, scallops, and conger eel were delicious, and the clam miso soup at breakfast was especially tasty. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s the best place to stay with your dog. I’d love to visit again.

I’d nearly given up on visiting Miyajima because the parking near the ferry terminal was full. I called the inn as a last hope, and they told me to come over. They parked my car, drove me to the nearest station, and even had coffee ready. I made it to Miyajima safely, and the service was amazing. The room and food were very good, too. The private bath was free for overnight guests, and I relaxed there with a drink. There was cold beer waiting in the changing room, which really impressed me. Alcohol, snacks, and ice cream were all you could eat, though I was already full from the meal. Such a luxurious, happy experience! 🥰

The room and bath were nice, which makes the rest such a shame. We stayed in the Jade room as two people for 150,000 yen, but the service and food didn’t justify the price. A male staff member spoke to us casually and asked, “Have you taken a bath yet?” I was surprised and wondered if he was looking down on me because I’m a woman. He offered to fill the tub but forgot to put the plug back in, so it didn’t fill, lol. The food was all pre-made. The dinner fillet was okay, but at that price I’d expect to be able to get several refills. Breakfast was awful: the old rice smelled bad and tasted terrible, and rice cakes were the only thing I could eat. Even the omelets seemed store-bought. They seem to be trying to make up for it with all-you-can-eat alcohol and snacks, but I found that crazy. It’s the worst inn I’ve stayed at, especially with my dog. If this continues, I don’t think they’ll get repeat guests. I recommend not going.
