At Hotel Setas Royal Ono, the open-air bath is said to be the largest in Izu, and it can even be reserved for private use after sunset. Its spacious, natural setting makes it feel like you’re part of the surroundings, with mountains, greenery, river views, and ocean views. The men’s and women’s baths switch at different times, and the sea-facing views are especially beautiful. The scenery changes with the seasons, so each visit can look different. The clean facilities and respect for guests’ privacy make it easy to relax. The heat of the spring water, fresh air, and sense of openness combine into a peaceful, restorative experience. It’s a good place to spend quiet time away from the city.

The walk from the hotel is quite long, just as Google Maps shows. The path is covered but still outdoors, so rain makes it hard to visit. At night it’s lit up, though it’s small. On a clear day, sunrise is spectacular.

You can use the big open-air bath at Hotel Cetus Royal privately, which is unusual for one this size. Reaching it takes a bit of a walk along a connecting passage. It’s actually open to the outdoors, and the height when you look out can feel a little scary. The water was quite hot, but the bath is so large that I found cooler spots to soak in.

Even though I was first to arrive, they didn’t handle my reservation in order. The receptionist was a foreigner and seemed inflexible. I wish the receptionist had been Japanese.
