Staying in the old principal's office was one of the fun possibilities here, since the guesthouse is in a former school. The building is spacious, clean, and easy to use. It’s also convenient to reach from Asahikawa Airport, and a good base for experiencing Hokkaido. There are shared toilets and a water area, as you'd expect in a guesthouse, though you can rent the whole building for a group or family. The dormitory sleeps up to eight and has a shower but no bathtub. You could also visit nearby Hanakagura Onsen.

This is a lovely place for solo travelers or groups, and they were flexible about my late checkout. The stay itself was perfect apart from a very frustrating check-in. Both the Booking.com self-check-in and the guesthouse tablet had problems. The tablet wouldn’t read my residence card, and nobody was there to help. I tried calling staff for about 1-1/2 hours at night, but got no answer or help. The only way I could get a key was to check in as Japanese, since that option didn’t ask for a photo of ID. There was no response about the issue through Booking.com either. Later, a woman on staff came to tell me to check out. I tried explaining in English and Japanese, but she just stared at me blankly. Foreigners are legally required to check in accurately, yet the staff seemed not to understand. I really hope they fix the system so foreign guests can check in easily and correctly.

I’m Taiwanese, and this was the first and last stop on my independent bicycle trip around Hokkaido. I checked in on October 6th, 7th, and 28th, and the trip ended safely and smoothly. The staff were a big help, especially the person at checkout who called a taxi for me, so I got to Asahikawa Airport without trouble. They also let me store my bicycle case, which made the trip much easier. The room had bath and hand towels, toothbrushes, and bathroom toiletries. I could use the kitchen for free, and there was a large refrigerator. Hotel guests get a discount at nearby Higashi Kagura University, where you can buy produce or have coffee. We had the place to ourselves since no one else happened to be staying there, so it was great value. The only downside was the lack of air conditioning. There was just a fan, which could make it tough in hot weather.
