Kokusai Kanko Hotel Kishotei

The hotel is quite old, though it may still be the best option in the area. We enjoyed a kaiseki dinner in the restaurant, with a lovely view toward part of the shoreline and city. There are public baths in two areas, and St Francis Xavier church and the Dutch trading post museum are both within walking distance.

The price is good, and free hot springs are included, which is a real plus. The room was a little dated but still pretty clean. I was surprised there weren't any curtains, and the stairs up to the hotel are really hard to climb.

The outdoor bath was such a relaxing treat, and breakfast was delicious. I stayed two nights with my son, and we'd happily return if we're in Hirado. Our large, clean traditional Japanese room was beautiful, with a view of Hirado Castle and the bridge. The staff were incredibly accommodating, arranging a shuttle into the town center and ordering a taxi for us.

The rooftop open-air onsen is great, and the room itself is nice with a beautiful view. But the bathroom was horrible: an old, small bathtub and a bidet that didn't work. The hallways smelled like sewer. The website says there's a restaurant on site, but there definitely isn't, and there aren't many nearby restaurants open either. I wouldn't come back. I don't think it's worth the money.
