Hotel Izukogen Monogatari

The lounge had a nice American feel, and the chef’s egg dishes were delicious. The rooms have a real Showa-era atmosphere, like being at your grandmother’s house. Mobile reception was weak, though the free Wi-Fi helped. At night I could hear bass and drums from somewhere, so it may not work for anyone expecting the quiet stay described on the hotel website. I’d still like to stay again.

The owner calls himself “Captain,” and his sociable manner made the stay unusual in a fun way. After we chatted, he even treated me to a beer. He’s happy to show you around the area too, which is handy for a spontaneous trip. The public bath is small, but there are only a few rooms, so you’re unlikely to run into many other groups.

We came across this place while looking for somewhere to stay that day and managed to call and book at short notice. The owner was kind about our sudden request, and we felt safe there with our small child. They’d thought of all sorts of extras: instant noodles and snacks for later, plus a drink bar and shochu mixers.

I’d usually pass this restaurant without knowing what it was, but going in was a surprise. The pizza has a chewy crust, lots of toppings, and tastes great. The pasta was good too, and the menu made it easy to tell what kind of pasta base each dish used.
