The spa was clean and easy to use, and the food, room, and service were all nice. My only gripe was the outdoor spa. The water was just lukewarm, and I think it needs more frequent cleaning.

A welcoming, family-run place about a seven-minute walk from Yumoto station. The staff are kind and try hard to help guests from overseas. You may even run into cosplayers or kigurumi guests staying there, which adds to the fun. If you want a friendly ryokan, give Ryokan Koito a try.

Really good hot spring.

The hot spring water was the highlight for me. It comes straight from the source, is slightly alkaline at around pH 8, and is described as undiluted, unheated, uncirculated, and unfiltered. A long corridor with a futuristic feel takes you to the public bath. There are two indoor tubs, one warm and one hot. The hot one was too much for me, I gave up after dipping in my toes. I could see why Fukushima springs are known for being so hot. I prefer outdoor baths, so I went in both the evening and morning. They were nearly private each time, and I could enjoy the strong spring water and its faint sulfur smell. I booked one night in the "Aloha-chan Room," the Onsen Musume collaboration room at Ryokan Koito in Iwaki Yumoto. It’s a concept room, and the assigned number was 311. The number gave me a little pause because of the local area, but it ended up adding meaning to the stay. The Japanese-style room has two life-size Aloha-chan panels, along with posters, decorations, displayed costumes, and other Onsen Musume goods. I spotted Iizaka's happi coat at the back. The room doesn’t rely on luxury, but the few details create a distinctive atmosphere. It’s spacious enough, and the futon was already laid out, so I could settle in right away. The key also has a special Aloha-chan acrylic keychain. There aren’t currently any specific merchandise bonuses with the Onsen Musume plan. I showed proof of my stay to the landlady at another inn, and she was interested; our chat left me hopeful about future developments. The plan does include one free drink at the inn’s bar, with a non-alcoholic option. If the timing works out, you can chat with the landlady, and talking after a bath is part of this inn’s charm. Dinner isn’t part of the plan. The first-floor bar is the dining area and also serves breakfast, which was a standard Japanese set meal followed by coffee. I used the bar, but didn’t see any dinner-included plans. Guests in cosplay may be around, depending on when you visit. I was there over a three-day weekend, and most guests seemed to be families. Onsen Musume goods are mainly sold in the shop; at the front desk, only the logo is available. Besides the two room panels, there’s a standard illustration, one of a character in a yukata, and a special character, Urume Aria, near the shop. The landlady, young owner, and staff were all warm and welcoming, and the place felt comfortable. Between the hot spring, the well-realized concept room, and the people, it’s somewhere I honestly want to visit again.
