We look forward to dinner. We arrived today, and the decoration is subtle but stunning, put together with that particular Japanese care where every object seems to have been considered, moved, reconsidered, and set down again. It made us smile. In the big cities, trust can feel suspect, but we're in a small village hours outside Tokyo. The Katsura River runs past temple gates and 800 year old cedars, and the Noh stage floats on its ancient pond like a thought that won't leave. I could see myself becoming a regular here. I've become one elsewhere: after strong coffee in Montreal, dark and uncompromising, tasting of winter even in July; café abatanado in Lisbon, pressed and purposeful; café con leche in Madrid, where the milk comes like a negotiation; espresso in Roma, swallowed standing up; and café noisette in Marseille, softened with just enough cream. Now there's bright green matcha ( matcha ) in Shizuoka, whisked to a froth that looks like the landscape itself has been liquified, poured into a bowl you hold with both hands. I tried the onsen carved into the rock, fed by hot underwater streams of salty spa liquid and calming influences. In Shuzenji, the lesson is to go slowly, pay attention, and wear kimono and socks.

A small mountain retreat we'll never forget. The family-run place is beautiful, with koi swimming on the property and natural hot springs and onsens both on site and in the rooms. It made for a spa-like, relaxing place to unwind after days walking around Tokyo and Kyoto. We had one of the best dinners of our vacation, and the staff were attentive and sweet, with incredible service and care for the details. If you want a traditional Ryokan or onsen stay, this is perfect.

The classic tatami beds felt like sleeping on a cloud, and we left feeling rested, centered, and zen. The food was creative and delicious, the best of our 10 day trip to Japan. Staff and service were exceptional, making this the most spectacular stay of our whole trip. A magical experience we'll cherish forever. Thank you to the Asaba family!

The room, the food, and the service were exceptional. One of the greatest experiences of my life. I'd highly recommend visiting, especially in autumn when the red leaves are falling.

This is a beautiful, peaceful ryokan, but I don't think the very high price is justified. The town is tiny, with little to do, so after a day relaxing at the hotel we got bored quickly. Staff were extremely kind and eager to help, but most didn't speak English, which made it difficult as a foreigner to explain what we needed. There weren't many ways to fill the time at the hotel either. It doesn't arrange activities, and the onsen has limited hours. There's also a spa. We were told they sometimes put on performances on the lake, but there weren't any while we stayed. I wouldn't recommend coming here, especially if you have limited time in Japan.
