Richmondhotel Kagoshima Kinseicho

The rooms aren’t modern, but they were very clean. Staff service was par excellence, and the traditional Japanese breakfast was so beautiful that it would be enough to make me choose this hotel again when I return to Kagoshima. It’s very convenient for walking to the waterfront overlooking Sakurajima, the ferry to Sakurajima, and Tenmonkan shopping district. The tram and a convenience store are right across from the hotel, and there’s a post office nearby.

We had a clean, cozy room with everything we needed for a short city stay. It wasn’t huge, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom had the amenities you’d expect from a Japanese hotel. The lobby felt modern and efficient, and check-in went smoothly. Staff were polite and helpful, and handled things with a smile even though we couldn’t speak Japanese. The hotel was a practical base while we explored the southern part of Kyushu. It’s right in the city center and a short walk from the tram stop. On a clear day, we could see Sakurajima. Food was easy to find, with restaurants, shops, and convenience stores just around the corner, handy for late-night snacks or breakfast. We’d definitely stay again if we return to Kagoshima.

The room was spacious and comfortable, and the price was good. Breakfast comes as a set menu, with several options to choose from, plus drinks, some salads, and extra items from the open bar. Check-in and the communication beforehand were good, too. The hotel is very central but a bit outdated. The view from our room looked into another building, which was disappointing.

The service was very Japanese: the staff were kind, helpful, and attentive, with proper deep bows when you came and went. We arrived early and left our suitcase, then found it waiting in the room when we returned a few hours later. The self-service toiletries had all the basics, including lotions, razors, and cotton pads. Our room was comparatively large and incredibly quiet. It was also good value, with an easy walk to the bus and tram and a 10-minute walk to the Sakurajima ferry port. Toit Vert, a very nice bakery, was close by. I’d recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Kagoshima and would only change the color temperature of the room light, which is a small thing.
