The Hotel Sanraku Kanazawa

Even with the crowds during Sakura season, everything seemed well managed. Our room was spacious, with a large window that brought in lots of natural light, and the bathroom was roomy too. We also appreciated the complimentary bottled water, bottled hojicha tea, teabags, and coffee machine. The location made it easy to get around on foot. The castle and shops are nearby, and there’s a 7-Eleven just down the road. Kanazawa Station is about a 20-minute walk away, or a quick taxi ride for around 1000 yen. I went for a couple of morning runs and found the area quiet and beautiful. There’s coin laundry in the building, plus vending and ice machines on every floor. We didn’t try breakfast because it costs an additional 4000 yen, though there was always a queue in the morning, so it seems popular. A gym or onsen would have made the stay even better.

The staff were supportive and helped with anything we needed. We were also grateful to have laundry available, even though we put too much in the machine. Following the instructions about how much to load would probably help it dry properly. The room felt small for three people, but the bathroom was very luxurious and the hotel itself was really nice. I wish our room had faced the inner courtyard. The hotel is close to the castle and gardens, and very near Omicho market, where you can find just about any kind of food. It wasn’t as close to the busy dinner area. We appreciated our stay.

We walked all over town during our stay, apart from taking a taxi to the train station when we left. The hotel is well located, and we found several delicious, authentic restaurants just a few blocks from the entrance. We didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant, so I can’t comment on it. Our room was large and well appointed, and the bed was the most comfortable of the many hotels we stayed at while travelling in Japan. Everyone on staff provided excellent service. The staff were friendly and very helpful, and the modern rooms had comfortable beds. The location is a plus too, close to the castle and the fabulous food market. It felt a bit like a hotel designed to get guests in and out. Breakfast was very Asian-centric, with no real bread options and no poached or fried eggs. The bar seemed half-hearted, closed at 10, and required paying at a separate counter. Taken together, the place felt a little short on soul.
