The tatami floors throughout meant we only needed slippers in the restrooms, which I loved. I also liked that the mineral water bath was mild in temperature, so I could stay in longer than I usually can. The food was delicate and delicious, with pure, gentle flavors that felt healthy and clean and suited the spa-like mood. It’s a luxurious place, and everyone was incredibly kind. It really is wonderful. Please ignore Geert Dewilde’s review, he seems clueless about what’s normal and desirable at a Ryokan. I’d urge anyone traveling in this region to try to book a room here.

The dinner is the real draw, every dish was carefully made and beautifully presented. Breakfast is more basic, but fine. I still think it’s good value for the quality of the meals. The most affordable Japanese-style room is quite small, just about enough space for two futons, and there’s no private bathroom. The shared toilet was the biggest drawback for us: it had no heater and was painfully cold during our November stay. It seems to be a family-run ryokan with limited staff.

After a long day on the Nakasendo Trail, this was just the place to rest. The room, service, and onsen were all terrific, and the food was the best we had in Japan.
