After exploring Kochi city, this was a lovely place to retreat to in the mountains. On my first visit to Kochi, I chose Auberge Tosayama for the experience and found it peaceful, with the river sounds in the background and a really warm, friendly atmosphere. They mentioned a 25 year anniversary, but the facilities feel modern. I especially liked the use of wood.

The dinner and breakfast left a strong impression. They chose seasonal foods well. The room was a good size, but I couldn't get the air conditioning or heater set properly, and I couldn't find the room water. The hotel is mainly for local Japanese guests, so don't expect fluent English or Chinese. It's up in the mountains and takes a while to drive to. Some parts of the route have two-way traffic on a single road, so I highly recommend arriving during the day.

The food and service were excellent 😀. This is a small boutique hotel with 12 rooms and four cottages. The cottages are nice, but they're quite far from the main building, across a bridge, so getting to the onsen bath at night is hard. I imagine it would be difficult in the rain too.

A stay among the hills, with afternoons spent in the onsen, mornings walking through farmland, and nights enjoying the amazing dinner made with local specialties in a unique way, then looking at the stars. A once in a lifetime experience!
