Toyoko was familiar enough, since we’ve stayed at many of them, and this one was fine. Parking costs $5 per night, and you can leave the car until checkout on your departure day. Breakfast was very crowded, with too few seats. I’m not sure how committed this hotel is to the environment. There were no soup bowls other than styrofoam, coffee was only served in paper cups, and the chopsticks were all single use. Every plate was wrapped in plastic. I understand staff may be short-handed and these choices might make things easier for them, but the brand shouldn’t advertise an environmental commitment while making no effort on this issue. Styrofoam won’t decompose, and every guest uses one of those bowls each day just for immediate convenience.

This is one of four Toyoko Inns in Kumamoto, and it’s an okay, cheap, easy hotel, though it felt cramped and showed its age. It’s in the middle of the city, but transport options are limited. Since this is the bus station branch, I’m guessing it’s meant for bus transfers. We arrived by bike, so getting there was fairly easy, but driving or taking a bus might be painful.

The manager, Yuko, and her staff were a real help to us, and we felt at home enough to extend our stay by a week. She pointed out the Kumamoto Drunken Horse festival on 9 Oct, right in front of the hotel. The parade lasted four hours, with ceremonial drums and bells. She also arranged an English newspaper, Mainichi Weekly, and responded to our questions with onsen recommendations for Amakusa (Ryugu), Kikuchi, Miyabaru (Chomeikan), Yamaga (Sakurayu), and Hirayama (Fugetsu). The hotel also has the comprehensive offerings you’d expect from the Toyoko Inn chain. Awesome!
