Kuriyama Ryokan

It worked well as an evening stop on the drive south from farther north, on the way to the airport. There were good dinner options nearby, a convenience store next door for snacks and drinks, and a bread shop around the corner where we got breakfast. The shared bathroom isn’t my first choice, but the price made it worthwhile. I could hear my girl crying down the hall, so it’s probably best to keep noise down.

Kuriyama Ryokan has a quiet, homey feel that I really like. It’s in the peaceful little town of Kuriyama, a good fit if you want a slow, relaxing break. For a budget Japanese-style place, it has what I need as a backpacker: a cheap but very comfy room, coin-operated washer and dryer 😍, clean bathroom and toilet 🎶🎶, and an easy location. Kuriyama Train station and the bus stop to Sapporo are five minutes away, the local supermarket is also five minutes away, and Seicomart is a minute away.

(Personal notes from a neurotic woman) - The facilities were clean. - The toilets and bathrooms are shared by men and women, so women need to think about when to use the toilet and sink. - There’s a microwave and kettle in the hallway.

The annex room had a homey feel, and I slept comfortably until morning. There’s a Seico Mart nearby that stays open until midnight for food and drinks. The room’s TV, refrigerator, and other appliances were connected through several power strips, apparently mounted overhead. That seemed fine for a phone adapter, but I felt a little uneasy about using a hair dryer, even briefly. I stayed during a motorcycle trip in July 2025. After taking the ferry into Otaru Port, it was just over an hour’s ride to the inn. I arrived late, but the self check-in plan made getting in easy. It’s directly across from Kuriyama Station and has parking, which was convenient.
