City Pension Tommy Rich Inn Kyoto had kind, helpful staff, which was easily the best part of our stay. The location was decent, but comfort fell short of what I expected. There was a noticeable smell in both the room and bathroom, and the doors made a lot of noise. The layout also had many steps, which could be a hassle with heavy bags or limited mobility.

We stayed three nights with friends, and it had a real dorm-like feel, almost like being students again. We liked that, but it’s good to know what to expect. The shared bathroom was a traditional Japanese-style setup, with same-gender guests sharing the bathing area, so there wasn’t much privacy while showering. The place was very clean. After we went out for the day, we’d come back to find the room tidied and the electric water boiler refilled. We hadn’t expected that, and it was a nice surprise.

Four of us spent five nights here. The owners were welcoming, and we loved the traditional Japanese-style room with beds on the floor. The rooms were great, and we’d recommend staying here.

We never actually stayed here six years ago, but we came across it online and the name stuck with us. City Pension Tommy Rich Inn is an amazing name.

The location in the old town was fantastic, and the place was clean and traditional Japanese, with very friendly staff. Prices get very high during cherry blossom season, though.
