Guest House Aoi Nakamoto

The owner was so kind and friendly, and my room was clean and comfortable. The neighborhood was peaceful and relaxing, with some breathtaking shrines nearby and major bus routes close at hand. This was just right for my time in Kyoto, and I’m grateful I stayed here.

The rooms felt stuffy, the bedding wasn’t clean, and there was dust. Somehow our jacket also got a white stain while it was in the wardrobe. On our second day, a friend came by and wanted to pay to add a bed. The owner got furious and shouted at one of us instead of politely saying no, claiming it was a rule in Japan. At another place we stayed, adding a bed had been completely acceptable. Some of us left for a proper hotel after that, and we didn’t get a refund. I wouldn’t recommend this place to foreigners.

I only stayed one night, but I loved it and wished I could have stayed longer. The simple tatami room had a padded bed and AC, and it was so comfortable I woke at 5 a.m. and didn’t want to get up. It was quiet, clean, and well organized, and they supplied body soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The price was very good too. My favorite guest house in Japan. Thank you, Nakamoto-San!

The owner was really friendly, the price was good, and the room and shared spaces were clean. The futons were good too. I had a great stay and would recommend it :) Try the Onigiri place down the busy street near the bus stop, and the izakaya a little way up the hill toward the river.
