I had a great week here. The owner is kind and genuine, and the place was spotless with everything I needed. My room felt airy and bright thanks to the high ceiling and window. It’s close to the river and train station, so getting to Uji for the day was easy. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars around, and I loved going for morning runs by the river. The guests were friendlier and more social than at other places I’ve stayed. Fantastic value, and I’d recommend it.

Wind Villa is exceptionally well placed for getting around Kyoto. Nishiki Market is about eight blocks one way; the National Museum and the old, large Sanjusangen-Do Temple are three blocks the other way. That temple has more than 1,000 ornate old statues. Nearby, there are small affordable spots for udon, curry, ramen, steak, and Japanese barbecue, plus two Family Marts, a McDonalds, and 7-11s. A sento is one block away, the subway is a few hundred paces away, and the nearby main road makes taxis easy to catch. Our taxi from Kyoto Station cost 900-1200 jpy. The guesthouse was purpose-built for travelers rather than converted from another building, and it’s less than ten years old. It’s compact but has a kitchen, lounge, laundry, and sanitary facilities, laid out carefully to make good use of the space. The place was spotless and uncluttered. Each toilet has a bidet, the rooms have individual mini-split heat pumps and openable windows, and access from the street is controlled. Each guest room also has a key card. We stayed two nights and met interesting people, including Buddhist nuns from China, visitors from Europe and Taiwan, and a few Americans. We’d sit together and chat in the evenings after sightseeing. Our host speaks impeccable English, has traveled widely, and seemed to understand what travelers need. He was gracious and helpful, and I saw him carry guests’ luggage up the stairs and bring it down when they checked out, without being asked. There are two room types. We tried a traditional Tatami room, where the buckwheat-husk mattress is stored in a closet during the day, and found it very comfortable. We also stayed in a smaller room with bunk beds. I spent a lot of time talking with our host about Japanese culture, current events, and world economics. We learned about Shintoism and Buddhism and their roles in Japan, which was enriching. Other travelers told me our private room was comparable to dormitory-style lodging nearby. Wind Villa is a real bargain. We came for Kyoto’s culture, distinctive shopping, autumn colors, and warm people, and weren’t disappointed. I can recommend it without hesitation, and we plan to return.

I saw your humanity in the pledge case while browsing social media. We need more people like you in this world. I’ll visit on my next trip to Kyoto. Support from a stranger. Arigatou Gozaimasu
