The family who runs this place made the stay special, especially with their wonderful hospitality and an incredible vegetarian feast for breakfast. The location in Gion is really convenient, too. It’s an amazing 170 year old machiya and a memorable way to end our trip to Japan.

The house is spacious, gorgeous, and feels like home, right in the middle of everything. The hosts were somehow even lovelier than the beautiful place itself. It was such a special, authentic stay. My only regret is skipping breakfast, because Masumi-San’s mochis were the best we’d had so far. Thank you so much.

Jeugiya Inn is run by Sei, the father, Masumi, the mother, and their son Bun. The guest quarters were built by Sei's father as part of the family home. They’re traditional, clean, comfortable, pretty, and peaceful. I loved looking out at the garden and soaking in the big wooden tub that faces it. The family were incredibly hospitable and helpful throughout. Sei spent nearly an hour showing us around the area, and Masumi and Bun arranged a dinner booking at Kagetsu, a traditional restaurant in Nagasaki that only takes reservations through hotel concierges in Japanese. Sei even drove us and our luggage to the station and showed us the elevator entrance we never would have found on our own. Masumi’s traditional breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented. It’s a quiet neighborhood, but temples, shrines, restaurants, and shops are all walkable. A few practical things: there’s no key for the accommodation, but the family is around and we could let them know when we were coming or going. They always greeted us when we left and came back. Shoes come off at the entrance, slippers are worn through the home, and slippers have to come off on tatami. There are separate slippers for the toilet, too. My husband and I kept having to remind ourselves of the different rules. The family sets out the traditional bedding at night and puts it away during the day. Also, if you’re over 5 ft 8 inches, watch the low doorways. My husband bumped his head several times, especially at night.

Our only disappointment was not booking more time here. From the start, the family who hosts us made us feel so welcome, offering a homemade treat and telling us about the beautiful, historic inn. That evening, the owner walked us around nearby Kyoto and pointed out interesting places and history. We had plenty of privacy to enjoy the lovely amenities at our own pace, while still feeling cared for. We’d absolutely come back and recommend Jeugiya to other travelers. So glad we met the Jeugiya family, thank you!

It really felt like home. The owners are such a treasure, and the food, place, and location were 100 out of 10. The homemade Japanese vegan food was the best ever. It’s a traditional house, but somehow the warmest place we’ve stayed so far, and we’ve seen a lot of places where you usually freeze indoors. The air conditioning is cleverly built in, so you don’t see or hear it, but it works really well.
