The stairs are narrow and steep, so getting larger luggage upstairs can be a challenge. Shoes stay by the entrance, and the hotel provides indoor ones. The traditional Japanese sleeping setup was a thumbs up for me. Check-in was easy, with the keys waiting on the desk under your name. Free green tea, matcha tea, and water are available, along with a shared refrigerator. Wi-Fi was sufficient. The host is around in the morning, and in the evening there’s a video with all the information you need.

We were lucky to have a room overlooking Kyoto Tower, and the futons were very comfortable. The rooms were clean, and the owner was kind, friendly, and always ready to help. Staying in this traditional ryokan-style place in Kyoto’s historic area made for a wonderful visit. We’d gladly return.

We booked for several days but left after just one night because we found lots of hairs in the bathroom, on the towels, bedding, and floor. It left us feeling disgusted, and we had to check out much earlier than planned. The owner was amazing and very accommodating, and we felt bad leaving, but we did receive a refund for the remaining nights. The small Japanese-style room offers an authentic experience, though I hope they take hygiene more seriously in the future.

The owner was friendly and helpful, and our room was in good condition. The ryokan is in a fairly quiet neighborhood. In winter the toilet can be very cold, so I’d suggest adding a heated seat. A lift would also help, since carrying large luggage from the third floor to the first can be challenging.
