The food was a huge part of why I’ll treasure this stay. The Nishitas wanted to cook for me, though I’m known for having the palate of a 4 year old and being an extremely unadventurous eater. I figured if anyone could make weird Japanese food good, it would be the Nishitas. They asked about my preferences, no tomatoes because I’m allergic and not much fish, which is a tall order in Japan, where diets include a lot of fish. They made an 11 course dinner just for me, featuring the most delicious beef. Every dish was delicious and a work of art. Three hours later, I thought the Nishitas were magicians. The Soba with duck was especially memorable, and that meal is one of my favorite memories of Japan. The husband and wife owners, the Nishidas, are delightful and made sure everything was perfect. The place is calm and serene, with unparalleled service. Kanamean Nishitomiya is more than an excellent hotel or restaurant, it’s a special experience I’ll cherish. It’s perfectly situated, a block from Nishiki market and near excellent shopping and public transportation. My suite was perfect. I travel with washcloths because most international places don’t have them, but the staff saw mine and left some for me so I wouldn’t have to use my own. It’s the only place I stayed in Japan that had washcloths, just one example of how they noticed my wants and needs and took care of them without being asked. I’ve stayed at a number of Relais and Chateau properties around the world, and most were excellent. Kanamean Nishitomiya surpasses them all. It’s a very different experience for an American to stay in a true Ryokan.

Our family of four had one of our best travel experiences here. The staff even helped us find personalized knives and introduced us to beautiful local pottery to take home. We loved the private garden, curated music, and all the thoughtful details around the property. A private dinner at Kanamean was unforgettable, with incredible food, considered wine and sake pairings, and care in every detail. The team was responsive and thoughtful from booking to departure, personalizing our stay, accommodating dietary restrictions, arranging dinners, and helping move our luggage across Japan with ease. We’ll recommend this to all our friends and family visiting Kyoto. Can’t wait to return.

I celebrated my birthday here, and the stay was unforgettable. The kaiseki dinner was extraordinary, with champagne, caviar, and French touches that made it unlike anything I’ve had at other Kyoto ryokan such as Hiiragiya or Tawaraya. My suite was comfortable and peaceful, and the wonderful bath helped me get a perfect night’s rest. The hosts were warm and attentive. Everything, from the atmosphere to the food and hospitality, felt both deeply traditional and distinctly European in spirit. A rare gem in Kyoto, absolutely worth a visit.

The Japanese bath was my favorite part, and the shampoos, soaps, and lotions felt luxurious. I felt safe throughout my stay, and the owners were lovely and made sure they could help at any hour. The place was incredibly clean, in a great location, and had everything I needed. Everyone I met, from check-in to check-out, was kind and helpful. I’ll definitely come back!

Dinner was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience, and the whole stay felt so authentic and unique, just what you’d hope for in an old ryokan. The owners and staff welcomed us so warmly and looked after us the entire time. The room and hospitality were both a 10 out of 10. Best day of our lives here. I can’t recommend this little oasis enough! ✨🙏
