Shimabara Kaiden

The staff were great, helping us book a restaurant and deliver our luggage. The beds were super comfortable, and the small kitchen was a nice extra. There were three of us, and the house felt spacious. The only inconvenience was having just one mirror, in the downstairs bathroom, which wasn't ideal for us girls.

The traditional machiya design was lovely, with a charming little courtyard and a tatami area where I could sit and unwind while looking out at the view. A roof skylight brought in plenty of daylight, and the sun falling across the dining table made a beautiful scene. The first and second floors were laid out so you could still see and talk to each other when people were on different levels, which seems great for families or friends. The house was clean and felt new throughout, inside and out. Everything we needed was provided, including dishes and tableware. I especially liked the glass kettle with hot and cold water, since we drank a lot every day. This was my most wonderful accommodation experience.

I chose the hourly rental because it fit what I needed during COVID-19: I could get there on foot or with one public transport ride and no transfer, have almost no contact with other people, and arrive without luggage. The check-in desk was near the station and easy to locate, and the staff member had a lovely smile and was kind. Their clear map made it hard to get lost. The room was spacious and very clean, the facilities were excellent, and I had a comfortable stay. I'd like to use the hotel again soon, even for an overnight visit.

The heated floors and bathroom kept the place cozy on a cold day. This lovely townhouse was spacious enough to relax in, clean, and a nice way to experience Kyoto. I'd be happy to stay here again.
