Ryokan Nakajimaya

The staff were lovely and looked after us really well. It's close to the main street, with plenty to do nearby. Such a wonderful traditional Japanese hotel stay, and we'll definitely visit again.

The rooms are spacious and very traditional, which worked especially well for us as a couple of tall Westerners. The lady who runs the place is really helpful and nice. It's a lovely Royokan just off Kyoto's main strip, very close to nishiki market. I'd absolutely recommend staying here.

Very Japanese atmosphere, and the two owners are kind and speak a little English. The rooms and toilets were clean and comfortable, with air conditioning in every room. It's also close to a station. A very good place to stay.

I chose a double room after reading reviews describing the inn as a "traditional ryokan," but there was a smell as soon as I entered the dorm, perhaps because I hadn't ventilated it often enough. During check-in, I was trying to have a conversation while the older employees kept going into another room and whispering to each other. It felt unpleasant. Be wary of the hype around this hotel. The booking site listed the double room at $41 per night, but when we checked in, we were charged another $150 because two people were staying in it.
