The host and her family are lovely, and do their best to make guests comfortable. You sleep on a futon over tatami mats and can wear a yukata to bed. The house is a beautiful, genuine machiya in the historic Shamabara quarters. A bus stop and JR train station are both within 10 minutes, and the city center is reachable by bus or train. It's an old house, so the walls are thin and you may hear guests in nearby rooms, though the host family are quiet. The shower and toilets are separate from the bedrooms, and there's a nice large bathtub. There are stairs to climb, too. If those things work for you, this is a good place to experience Japanese living. Knowing a little Japanese will help you communicate with the host.

Trying the Ryokan experience was important to me, and Kyoto felt like the right city for it. The accommodation and the surroundings were nice, and the people were kind and very helpful. They picked us up from the train station and took us back as well. A really amazing experience, 100% recommended!

The area was quiet, with the popular spots close by by train or bike. The staff were helpful, even though they knew very little English, and in my experience they helped more than some English-speaking staff I've met. Better than I expected. I'd stay again if I visit Japan.
