Stay Sakura Kyoto Kiyomizugojo

Location was perfect for us, with an easy walk to Gion, Giyomizu-dera, lots of temples, and shopping. We'd gladly come back if we could be sure of getting a back-facing room. We were lucky to have one, since the street out front was so busy you could hardly run across it. There are six rooms per floor: two facing the back, one to the side, and three at the front. Noise wasn't an issue for us, though I can't say whether it might be in a front room. The room was small but okay, with great air conditioning and a good view. We loved the washer in the room and drying function in the shower stall. The hotel may have been lovely a few years ago, but it's a bit run down now, and the carpet in the public areas was pretty horrifying. At the desk there was only one person at a time; not all spoke English, and they didn't seem empowered to handle problems.

The room had decent space for Japan, and the bathroom itself was clean. There was a washer, though its drying function didn't work. Other parts of the room, especially the curtains, were disgusting, and the hallway was dirty too. The hotel is near the old centre, but not Nishiki Market, which seemed like a nicer area. It also sits by a busy, noisy street and next to a fire station.

Everything was spotless, and the staff were polite. They even lend guests umbrellas. The room felt spacious and comfortable, with a big bed and lots of storage. It had what we needed for a full stay: a washer with detergent tablets, a sink, kitchen utensils, and a bathroom clothes dryer. We picked it because of the good reviews, and it still surprised me in a good way. No complaints.

Convenience stores are easy to reach, with a FamilyMart right across from the hotel and a 7-Eleven about two blocks away. It was quiet at night, and the employees were friendly. The rooms had comfortable beds and enough space, plus a laundry machine and separate kitchen, bathroom, and toilet areas. Green tea and instant coffee were there to make in the kitchen. The location depends on what you're after: temples and historic sights are close, while restaurants and nightlife are farther off. Most bars and places to eat take about a 15-minute walk. A highly recommendable Kyoto option.
