As an Australian, I found it a little hard to adjust to the traditional Japanese way of living.

We were three people and found the place comfortable, though I think four would be about the most comfortable group size. It can sleep up to six, with two toilets, and the washing machine also has a drying function. The inn is an easy walk from the Shijo area, with public baths, convenience stores, and restaurants close by. We stayed several nights, but after cleaning the bath mat was missing, and used amenities weren’t replenished. Those service lapses cost it a star.

The renovated machiya has lovely character and fantastic decor. It works best for four people, though some practical details could be better: the lighting is dim, and there’s no towel rack in the bathroom.

It could feel a bit chilly in winter.
