I found most of the other castle areas less interesting, apart from a few nice gardens. Plan on about 1.5-2.5 hours. The Ninomaru Palace is especially worth seeing: it's very well preserved, with plenty of signs explaining the rooms and the castle's history. Walking over the nightingale floor was magical, and I liked the mannequin figures that help you picture life there. Photos aren't allowed inside, but I'd still recommend going. The castle itself may not look especially flashy, though its history is incredibly rich and interesting, so it will appeal most to people curious about that or already familiar with Japanese history. I recommend getting a ticket for the castle grounds and Ninomaru Palace. The inner Honmaru grounds are also worth a look. Going inside those buildings costs extra, and reviews saying there wasn't much to see put me off. The tower keep ruins, though, work like an observation deck and offer really nice views over the grounds.

The outdoor Shiro-geki show at 8:00 PM was a highlight, especially the two leads, who gave an emotional, powerful performance. It got much colder after sunset than we expected, so wear layers. We bought the combined palace and Shiro-geki ticket and found it worth it. We arrived around 7:00 PM and saw vivid, modern projection mapping across the palace exterior, a striking contrast with the old stone walls. Inside, the mood was quiet and luxurious, with exquisite woodwork and intricate ancient screen paintings. Remember that shoes and photography aren't allowed inside to protect the historic site. Weekday visits can also mean a slightly cheaper ticket.

The gardens were a favorite part for me. They're beautifully maintained, quite spacious, and lovely to wander through for dozens of minutes. I also found the nightingale floor memorable after hearing so much about it, and the palace architecture and history make the castle worth a visit. Photography isn't allowed inside the palace. You don't need an advance ticket unless you plan to enter the inner palace, which, as I understand it, may not be worth the extra visit. The general admission ticket should be enough.

The grounds make just as much of an impression as the palace. I found the seasonal scenery calming to walk through, with carefully shaped pines, quiet ponds, and graceful rock features that show off traditional Japanese garden design. Nijo Castle brings its history and natural beauty together beautifully.

The gardens outside bring a peaceful balance to the castle's grand, powerful feel. Inside, the painted rooms and wooden floors are lovely, and the famous nightingale floors make a clever sound as you walk over them. Exploring Nijō Castle felt like stepping into the world of shoguns and Japan's past. It was one of our Kyoto highlights, with a graceful, storied atmosphere. A great place to experience history, architecture, and old Japan together.
