The shoji screens let in soft, diffused light and give the room a calm, welcoming feel, with a little transparency while still offering privacy. Their light, movable design also makes the layout feel open and flexible, much like a minka. We found the home serene and thoughtfully put together, with tatami mats and traditional shoji doors balanced by comfortable bedding, soft furnishings, and warm lighting. Wood, rice straw tatami, and sliding partitions reflect a traditional approach that values simplicity, flexibility, and harmony with nature. That minimal style made for a restful stay. A past review raised soundproofing concerns and mentioned the sliding doors. Shoji panels do let more sound through than solid walls or modern doors, but the ambient sounds, from nature or quiet household noise, felt charming to us rather than disruptive. This was a lovely mix of traditional Japanese architecture and practical Western touches. If noise bothers you easily, consider sleeping on the ground floor. The entry is also a sliding door, as in many traditional Japanese houses. We didn't see it as a safety concern in Japan. Thanks for having me!
The smell inside was unbearable, musty and damp, especially around the air conditioning. My husband has severe allergies, and the air was so bad we couldn't spend even one night there. We had to leave and find somewhere else. From the moment we arrived, the location felt unsafe. We could hear street noise through the paper-thin walls, including shouting late at night. The front door was faulty and extremely difficult to open, which made us seriously concerned about safety. This was an awful stay and the worst Airbnb experience we've had. The listing felt completely misleading: the place was unsafe and unclean, and not what had been advertised. I was shocked this was allowed on Airbnb. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Avoid it.
We had to leave right away because the damp, moldy smell was overwhelming, especially when the air conditioning was running. My husband has severe allergies, and staying there didn’t feel safe for his health. The place was unlivable. We also felt unsafe from the start. The neighborhood seemed sketchy, we could hear every street noise and shout through the paper-thin walls, and the broken front door barely opened. The host has copies of our passports, too. If our information is misused, we’ll file a police report and take formal action. This property is a health and safety hazard and shouldn’t be listed on Airbnb or any platform. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Shameful.
The fridge had an unpleasant smell, which was the one small issue. Otherwise, everything was provided and the experience was perfect overall. It made for unforgettable memories at the ryokan.
The outdoor bath was great, but the room was cold because the door didn’t close properly, and there probably isn’t insulation between the walls. I wish there were more than one toilet and that it was separate. The place also needs cleaning. The AC stopped working because its filter was dirty, so we cleaned it ourselves.
