Kyoto Watazen Ryokan Hotel

The public baths downstairs were a highlight, and I left feeling relaxed. The place is well located, with a very spacious room and clean facilities throughout. Staff were warm and welcoming. It seems suited to solo travelers or groups, and I’d be happy to come back to this Ryokan. Simple, comfortable and relaxing.

We’ve stayed at Watazen twice now, and the service is still incredible. The breakfasts changed every day and were among the best meals we’ve had in Japan. One practical issue with the Japanese-style rooms is the lack of storage, even no hooks for coats or towels. We ended up living out of our suitcase, with belongings spread across the floor. The front desk deserves special mention: when we left a bag containing a passport in a taxi, they sprang into action and got it back to us within a few hours.

For my husband’s birthday, we booked one night at Watazen Ryokan as a treat during our Kyoto trip. The traditional room was the biggest we had in two weeks in Japan, and the included dinner and breakfast made for a memorable evening. We also enjoyed soaking in the onsen after a long day of walking. The ryokan is centrally located, and the front desk staff were so friendly. It was a unique cultural experience and a real highlight of our trip.

We had the sukiyaki dinner in a private room next to ours, and breakfast was a lovely traditional spread. The baths were clean and pleasant to use, and the service was great. It’s a helpful, relaxing little inn in a central spot that’s easy to reach. If you’re considering it, go ahead and book.
