We checked into Xcellent Hotel Kyoto around 6 PM the night before and found used slippers in a room that hadn’t been properly cleaned. Then, after checking out, we realized we’d left a wedding ring in the bathroom. We immediately called and messaged the hotel, returned from the train station, and begged staff to help us retrieve it. They were inconsiderate and unhelpful. They focused on the late checkout fee and payment before letting us get our belongings. We understood we were late and were willing to pay, but expected some compassion given the situation. Even our taxi driver tried to speak with the staff. They insisted the cleaner had already picked up the ring, but after we paid the penalty and got the passcode, we found it in the same spot in the bathroom. With the taxi waiting and our bullet train schedule at risk, the whole experience was stressful. I hope management trains staff to handle urgent concerns honestly and compassionately, and improves customer service and cleanliness.

We left our bags as directed when we arrived early and went out for the afternoon. At 8pm, we came back to a room that hadn’t been cleaned, with trash everywhere and our bags still out in the open. There was no hotel staff we could contact, so we had to find and pay for somewhere else that night, and weren’t refunded. We did get our money back a week or two later, but only after fighting for it. Disgusting. DO NOT STAY!

Really disappointing service. A water heater, or kettle, was advertised as being provided, but we didn’t get one. We asked on our first day, and the host said it would be delivered the next day. It never arrived before we checked out.

We were really pleased with our two-night stay on a quick Kyoto trip. The room was much more spacious than our previous accommodations, and cheaper too. The bed was super comfortable, and the clean bathroom and bathtub felt modern. It’s conveniently located near a bus stop and a short walk from the nearest train station. There’s a familymart around the corner, plus a very good ramen and yakitori restaurant just 1-2 mins away. Customer service was excellent. They let us drop off our luggage before check-in, and I appreciated the quick replies over text. We’ll definitely come back on our next trip to Kyoto.

The facilities are very good, and the rooms are comfortable. It’s in a decent location too. I hardly saw any staff, though that could be a plus for some people. A good place to stay.
