I was there for three nights in May 2024, and the experience was pretty meh. When I arrived around 7pm, nobody was at the front desk. It took me a good hour to find someone who could check me in. The owner showed me the room, then told me to call whenever I wanted to shower. Yes, really. He pointed out Kirkland green tea bags and said, “enjoy some Japanese tea.” The location was okay, but the bath only fits two people and the toilets are smaller than an airplane toilet. I don't get all the glowing reviews. This didn't feel like a typical ryokan, and I've had much better stays elsewhere, with exceptional customer service. I asked for breakfast 48 hours ahead, but the owner couldn't accommodate it and said the market was closed that day. A market in a city like Kyoto, closed for days? I'd rather spend my money somewhere else, with an owner who doesn't treat me like a child or act superior about everything.

The welcoming service stood out during our stay at Inn Nishijinso. The Okami and manager were both friendly and happy to share Kyoto sightseeing tips, and the manager speaks English very well. From the moment we entered, the traditional inn felt peaceful and inviting. Its architecture and furnishings are carefully considered, with spacious rooms, tatami floors, and surprisingly cozy futon beds. Breakfast was a feast, with beautifully prepared dishes showcasing Kyoto's food traditions. The traditional Japanese bath, or onsen, was also a memorable way to unwind after exploring the city. The whole place is lovely, and the attention to detail adds to the authentic feel. Service, setting, and hospitality made this an unforgettable stay. For a traditional Kyoto inn at a very affordable price, I highly recommend it.

The hosts were so kind, friendly, and helpful. The traditional Japanese inn was cute, and our room was clean, comfortable, and really nice. Wish we'd stayed longer.

Everything was clean and pleasant, and the manager and his wife took great care of guests. They're amazingly kind, and the manager speaks English and is attentive to what you need. It's a quiet ryokan away from the busy streets, which I'd highly recommend if you want to escape the city's noise. Imadegawa Station is about an 8-minute walk, and there's a bus stop around the corner.
