Matsue Urban Hotel

The bathroom was tiny, barely bigger than an airplane lavatory, though it did fit a toilet, sink, and shower-tub. I'm a big guy, so showering was a challenge, and even my petite girlfriend thought it was cramped. There wasn't anywhere to put toiletries, a towel, or clean underwear. Still, the room itself, staff, and breakfast were all fantastic, and I have no other complaint. I'd stay here again.

Breakfast was the bright spot here: the buffet was great, and under 1000 Yen made it well worth the price. The room itself was cheap, but smelled really musty. It was cramped, with a tiny bathroom where the shower is attached to the sink, an uncomfortable bed and pillow, and nowhere to put anything. The window was so small it made the room feel like a jail cell. The halls aren't air conditioned, so going between the room and elevator meant a blast of hot air. I wanted to leave as soon as I arrived, and eventually did. Unless your budget is extremely tight, I'd stay away. The breakfast is still worth trying, even if you don't stay there.

I've stayed here twice now, and I'd happily come back. The capsule rooms are new, comfortable, and very clean, especially for such a low price. I was pleasantly surprised by all the included basics, from towels and pajamas to slippers, body wash, and shampoo. They have information printed in English at the front desk, and some of the staff speak English too.

The staff were friendly, but that didn't make up for the state of the building. Rooms, especially in the main building, were cramped and dirty, and the hotel feels poorly maintained. It's not very expensive, but still terrible value. I'd say it isn't worth even half the price. Breakfast was awful too. I can't remember having a worse cup of coffee. I haven't stayed at Matsue Excel Tokyu Hotel next door, but it looks more modern, so I'd suggest considering it instead.
