Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu

The hotel is a 3 minute walk from Nawate and Nakamachi streets, right in the middle of the places you’d likely want to visit in Matsumoto. We came by car, and the hotel can provide affordable tickets for the adjoining public parking space when you check out, so ask at reception. Our Japanese-style room worked well for two nights with a family of five. It had a simple, pleasant feel and everything we needed: a TV, Bluetooth speaker, low table and tea set, plus a bathroom, toilet, and sink outside the tatami rooms. Breakfast was good, especially the curry and 100% apple juice. The bathhouse was nice, though it was indoors only, which was disappointing since I prefer an open-air bath. Service was friendly and welcoming, as it usually is in Japan.

On a previous visit, I found the place peaceful and quiet, with friendly staff. It looked dark, but there was no stuffy smell. Everything was very clean and comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. It’s near the Castle.

The staff were welcoming and very accommodating, and the public bathhouse was clean and relaxing. Breakfast is worth recommending, with a full selection for Western tastes and anyone keen to try local food. There’s also a reasonably priced laundry area: 200 yen to wash and 300 yen to dry for 1.5 hours. The location is convenient for the main sights and train station, both within walking distance. The rooms feel quite outdated, though the beds are comfortable if you book a bigger room. The small two-bedroom has a bed that’s too small for two people. Booking.com's description seemed off, since it listed the place as a 4-star hotel. That may have been true at some point, and the hotel’s charm makes up for the lack of modern amenities. Even with the dated rooms, it was a great stay.
