We spent three very enjoyable nights here. The traditional room was spacious, and the food was delicious, clearly made with care. It was a lovely place to relax, with a beautiful wooden onsen, classical music, and a fire in the public living room. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. We'd originally looked at staying in Kami-Kochi, but were very happy we chose Norikura Kogen. You can take a bus to Kami-Kochi for a day trip, or simply head outside the hotel to explore the beauty of Norikura Kogen.

We came as a couple to hike nearby and stayed four nights. This guesthouse is in a fantastic location and was a real highlight of our Japan trip. The area feels un-touristy with Westerners while still being set up for visitors. Buses go to different spots around Mt Norikura. We rode to Sanbondaki falls, hiked the rest of the way up, then took the bus back. There were beautiful autumn colours and waterfalls all around, plus little cafes and shops and good souvenirs. Most people seem to stay one or two nights, but we were glad to have four. Our room was comfortable and a good size, and the futons were nice to sleep on. There wasn't much natural light, but it wasn't a big issue. The communal lounge was also comfortable, with low seats and a wood-burning stove, a nice place to sit and read. The onsen was fantastic. We only used the private bath, which guests can book for 30 minutes a day, and mostly chose the outdoor one to watch the stars. The hosts were wonderful. The two younger people spoke good English and were incredibly helpful throughout. We're vegetarian, and they made dinner reservations at different restaurants for us, then even picked us up from one after dark. They also gave us hiking recommendations and were lovely in general.

I liked having a roomy place to unwind by the fireplace, with comics to read and fans circulating the air. In the morning I had a cup of the house coffee, which was free. If you enjoy Japanese food, booking dinner sounds worthwhile for the regional dishes. There are lovely, clean indoor and outdoor baths you can use anytime without a reservation. They also have a private hot spring that costs extra, and it seems worth reserving for at least an hour. You can relax there and listen to the water while looking at the sky against the trees.

The staff were really kind and accommodating, and the owner's son, I think, speaks decent English, so not knowing Japanese shouldn't be a problem. It's a cozy, decent hotel with delicious food. I didn't get to try the fish in sake, though.

A budget-friendly place that seems better suited to hikers. The room was tiny, with no view, and everything was very basic. Toilets and bathrooms are shared. There is a public onsen, plus a nice private one.
