The food was much better than we expected, and we really enjoyed the onsen. We stayed at the glamping site about 200 meters from the main hotel. It was a bit inconvenient since there’s no toilet in the room, though a shared one is nearby.

The onsen was pretty good, and the restaurant was cheap. That was about the only consolation. The room felt small for the price and had an outdated design, and I almost refused to pay because the stay was so bad. I booked a Japanese room for five at USD500 a night. The website hadn’t been updated to say the ski resort had closed by 9 March 2025. The hotel was almost empty in the low season, yet the price was still so high that I felt cheated. I should have been suspicious when some of my Booking.com messages went unanswered.

The front desk staff member from China was so friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious, and the hotel felt very family-friendly. I saw families playing bingo scratch games in the hall, and the kids looked super happy. We had a great stay.

Komagatake was visible from every room, and the sunrise in the morning was especially beautiful. There’s plenty for families to do in every season: the indoor pool with a slide is open all year, while summer brings a small amusement park with little rides, kids’ equipment, and athletic equipment. In winter, there are gentle ski slopes. Indoors, kids can use the playground equipment, and families can try the bowling alley, karaoke rooms, or Dagashi-ya. There’s also a hot spring bath if you want one. They serve generous Washoku (Japanese cuisine) in the evenings. If you’re staying around Onuma with children, don’t miss this place.
