Hotel Shion

Dinner was a highlight: the courses arrived smoothly and on time, and we enjoyed the food. Breakfast was a letdown by comparison, with muted flavors and juice that tasted watered down. We thought it could be better for a hotel this nice. The room was roomy and comfortable, with a bathtub, and the futons were surprisingly good to sleep on. We were also delighted with the full, clear view of Mount Iwate. My partner had contacted the hotel ahead of time about the room, and the staff were attentive and helpful. Hotel Shion is enormous, with lots of parking, and the view across from it of the bridge, sunset, and Mount Iwate was stunning. The public onsen has both indoor and outdoor baths, though there’s no private option. There’s a small shop inside, too. Staff were welcoming and friendly; they spoke a little English, but we had no trouble communicating. One thing to know on arrival: the elevator is inside the building. We came in through the basement entrance and carried our bags ourselves, as there were no staff there. The main lobby, which I think is on the second floor, would have been easier to use. Even with that small snag, it was a memorable stay, and we’d choose it again if we’re back in the area.
