The rooms are modern, breakfast is good, and the friendly staff are hardworking skiers who stay for a few months. They're also happy to help, but seem either untrained in hospitality or poorly managed. There's a shuttle to the station and lifts, too. Those positives don't make up for how overpriced this place is for what feels like a backpackers' hotel. There's no staff presence or front desk, rooms aren't cleaned during a stay or ready on arrival, and our third bed, despite being paid for, arrived at night. I had to carry it upstairs and make it myself. Check-in meant messaging someone on WhatsApp to get a door code. The elevator has apparently been broken since opening. The onsen gets cleaned in the middle of the day and stays a third full until evening. I could go on. Find a proper hotel run by professionals who can provide the excellent service Japan is known for.

Last year the hotel changed owners and management, so the positive reviews are about the previous team. The current place should be avoided. It feels unfinished, with building materials around the property, and has no staff or reception, no room cleaning, no elevator, and no service. The onsen was either dirty or unavailable. Prices are at luxury hotel levels. Don't go, it could ruin your holiday.

The hotel sits a little way up the hill from the main street, about a three-minute walk. From there you can walk to the nearest ski lift or take a bus to the farther ones, and the hotel has a minivan and can help with rides. The newly renovated interior is beautiful, with well-designed rooms and fixtures, plus a small Japanese-style breakfast dining area. The staff were wonderful and had good advice on skiing and places to eat. They also made a great breakfast. John, the owner, was friendly and helped arrange our transfers and dinner.

You pay hotel prices but get a backpacker experience. Matsuya Hotel has no reception or people around to help, no well-laid-out rooms with storage, and nowhere to sit and relax. The place seems to be left in the hands of working holiday graduates. They're very nice and capable, but appear to be running it on their own rather than being supported by professionals. Stay away!

Everything feels new and comfortable after the full renovation, and it may be the nicest hotel in Myoko. There are several room choices, including family rooms and twins, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The owner also runs 'The Address', where guests can use its small but lovely onsen. It was very clean and the temperature was perfect. I understand Matsuya's onsen is due to reopen next month after a full renovation, and I assume it'll be just as impressive.
