The town is lovely to walk around, and our room had a beautiful river view. The futons were super comfortable. The staff were so sweet and helped us however they could, even though I felt bad that I couldn't speak Japanese. This was a fabulous ryokan, and I think the private onsen cost about 700 yen to book.

Great location, right beside the Yamaguchi bus stop and about a 10-minute walk from the main street shops. It's a low-key, family and child-friendly onsen hotel that I'd happily recommend. The room was clean and well equipped, and the rooftop view was beautiful. The open-air bath was excellent. Staff did their best to communicate in English, and the service was more than five-star.

It's beautiful, though quite out of the way, and very expensive for a ryokan. I still think it was mostly worth the price. The rooms were clean and the service was ridiculously good. English wasn't very well supported, but that's what you get going so far off the beaten path. If you're after a comfortable ryokan stay, this is an easy choice.

The foreign staff member was very kind and helpful, but the service overall felt routine, without the warmth of a traditional Japanese ryokan. The food, facilities, and general atmosphere were all well below what I'd expect from a so-called high-class Onsen Ryokan hot spring inn, especially at this price. Dinner and breakfast were average in taste and rather small portions. I stayed two or three weeks ago.

Toshimaya was perfectly situated in a beautiful town. The Shima River had a strong character while we were staying along its path. Thank you for the warm welcome, generous flavors, and lovely dishes. May the year of the wood dragon bring you plenty of wealth.
