The free bikes saved our trip. They’re small and a bit rusty, but we could use them without charge when all the electric bikes for hire in the village were sold out. The place is convenient, charming and very affordable, though next time in Naoshima I’d book a room with Western beds, or ask for another set of futon mattresses to stack up. It’s an old-fashioned little Minshuku with only about three or four rooms, so there were few guests. It was quiet when nobody was talking, and had a nice cedar smell. We booked a large Japanese room by email and got quick, very short, efficient replies. It had thin mattresses, fresh yukatas, towels, a small fridge and TV. The toilet and bathtub, with a toothbrush, were across the hall, not ensuite. The bathroom has partly renovated pink tiles, which was a nice change from the standard plastic-box style of Japanese bathrooms. Still, it could use a better fan than just an open window. WiFi was slow.

Only a minute from the bus station, this was a comfortable, clean guest house. The owner is a kind man and lends bikes to guests for free. There are only a few people staying at any one time, so it feels peaceful and pleasant.

The owner was incredibly welcoming and kind, and even let us borrow bikes. Riding around Naoshima that way was a great experience. The inn is basic but very comfortable, close to all the art projects, and the room we had was affordable and very, very spacious.

The free bikes were a real plus, especially since other places would make you rent them. Just remember to take the lock key when you leave! The room was much larger than some hotel rooms I’ve stayed in, though the washroom was about as small as most of them. I was very early and only expected to leave my bags while I walked around the island, but the host had my room ready and let me in. He also took time out of his day to drive me to the port on the other side of the island. I’ve stayed at 15 hotels on this trip so far, and this was one of my favourites. 10/10, I’d stay again.

We had such a great experience here. The owner was fantastic from the moment we arrived until he said goodbye, and even drove us to the port in the morning when there was no bus running. It’s a lovely place if you want to try staying somewhere very Japanese, with futon mattresses to sleep on.
