It had been a while since my last trip to Shiobara Onsen, and I was glad to find the staff, room, and bath all great. Good timing meant I got to use the private bath about three times, and they charged my car for free. The dining room was private, so I could relax over the delicious famous stone hot pot and really enjoy the hot springs. I did have trouble figuring out how to fill the humidifier. The kettle was confusing too, and I wound up adding hot water with a cup several times.

We went for an evening walk to see the autumn leaves lit up, and they were beautiful. It was a little cold out, but the staff guided us to the hot springs, which I appreciated. Both dinner and breakfast were especially tasty, with food that was good for the gut. I’d like to stay again.

We were lucky to find the private bath available early in the morning, and really enjoyed using it. The hot spring water was excellent, and even though November was a bit chilly, soaking outdoors was pleasant. It was a cozy, relaxing stay. The food was especially good, and my elderly parents finished every bit, the first time they’d done that in a long while.

We came at the end of October with a preschooler and an elementary school child. The kids could use yukatas and slippers, and private baths are available whenever one is free. Children aren’t given haori jackets, though, so you may want to bring something for the walk to the foot bath. It wasn’t cold inside the facility. The adult meals were generous and left us full, and switching our elementary schooler to a children’s meal still meant more than enough food, with lots left over. The hot spring eggs at the foot bath are supposed to boil for at least 30 minutes. We left ours for about 50, and both the yolk and white came out soft and fluffy. There’s also a mixed bathing section behind the partition by the open-air bath.

Dinner was delicious and filling, and the stones performed well. I enjoyed the bath too, and will definitely come back. The building is dark and old, but that doesn’t bother me.
