I normally book clean, well-kept business hotels, so I was uneasy about the safety and look of this place. I thought the inn was in the main building, but it turned out to be an annex about a 15-minute drive from Nichinan Station. There were around five hut-like buildings together, and the area felt dark and frightening. The door seemed more like a back entrance, which left me feeling completely unsafe. Opening the sliding door to my room gave me such a bad feeling that I wanted to leave. The bathroom had orange tiles that I found so scary I skipped the bath and went to a nearby hot spring the next day. I’d booked two nights, but couldn’t bring myself to return and left after one. Maybe it has a Showa-era atmosphere? I should’ve booked sooner, since I knew it was camping season.

The food was good back then, and there were no ghosts. I stayed here about 30 years ago while working at a construction site. The inside wasn’t especially pretty, but it had a charm of its own. I was the youngest, and the two women there took a liking to me. On my days off they’d take me persimmon-picking. I’m sure they’re still alive, so I’ll leave out the details. If you like a quiet, retro place, you’ll be fine here.
The heater was already on when we got there, which was really handy. We were three family members, including an elderly person, and slept well in the Japanese-style room. It had a mattress with a futon laid over it.
It’s an old building, but it was clean. You can hear noise from the rooms out in the hallway, though that didn’t bother us since we were only there to sleep.
The place was quiet, maybe because of the signs asking people to keep the noise down, and I personally liked the stay more than at other business hotels. Still, a couple of things were frustrating. I booked without meals, but the amount I’d been quoted at reservation time was lower than what I paid. The higher charge matched the website rate, so I suspect they used the regular price because I’d booked over Obon. They also nearly put me in a twin room instead of the double I’d reserved. Parking is limited and the small lot is hard to maneuver in.
