Hotel New Ohruri

Breakfast was actually pretty decent compared with the dinner buffet, and the onsen water was warm. The location is nice. The staff were kind while we were there, but at checkout they tried to charge us again even though we’d already paid online. The rest of the place felt unmaintained, dystopian, and honestly unsafe. There were holes in the ceiling, filthy, creepy hallways, and cockroaches around the property, including in the rooms. Our room was dusty and musty and clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly. There was visible mold, the sink was loose and tilted so water didn’t drain right, the shower air filter was hanging down almost ready to fall, and the balcony was filthy and unusable. The onsen area was dirty, with slimy surfaces. The indoor bath was in terrible shape, with broken mirrors and windows that wouldn’t shut. Dinner was disappointing: the rice was lukewarm and poorly cooked, and the food was bland. My two friends and I felt unwell afterward. If you’re looking for a bad experience, you’ve found it. I think the building may be a health hazard. It needs a full renovation, deep cleaning, and better maintenance. I can’t recommend staying here. I hope the owner and emplyees give this Hotel the care it deserves in the future.

The beautiful view and the fact that it was the cheapest option nearby were about the only things I can point to as advantages. The place really needs better customer experience management, starting with cleanliness and a proper mattress instead of the makeshift bed setup. It’s old, which is fine, but everything felt dirty and unwashed. Check-in was chaotic enough that I wasn’t sure the staff knew what they were doing; it seemed like their first time. The upper-floor hallways smelled strongly of cigarettes. I guess smoking and non-smoking rooms are on the same floor. The corridors were in very poor condition.

Great views of the river from the rooms, and the setting beside it helped make up for the worn facilities and interiors. If the state of the interior doesn’t bother you much, it’s good value for a hotel with a view.

The river view in the photos turned out to be real. That was about the only thing that matched them. The price drew me in, but the rest of the hotel was in terrible shape. My room was acceptable except for a refrigerator in awful condition that seemed not to have been defrosted in years. It looked clean at first, but the closet had a thick layer of dust along with the pillows. The hallway garbage cans stank, and the corridors and dining room looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in ages. The food wasn’t tasty. The eel at dinner was so bad we skipped it, and mealtime was short, perhaps because there wasn’t much to enjoy. Staff were friendly, and the older gentleman at reception was especially helpful and kind. Thank you very much. I gave the rating an extra star because of him. Another staff member seemed to have no training. During dinner, a guest fainted. I don’t know what would have happened without the other customers. There was an issue with the ice pack, and staff wouldn’t even provide a plastic bag for it. Nobody seemed to care about the guest. When staff called an ambulance, the emergency exit they were trying to use was blocked by debris, so hotel guests had to help themselves. Unbelievable. I like Showa and retro style, but this hotel is in awful condition and offers practically nothing beyond the view. I’d only recommend it to people who want to visit countries like Russia or North Korea without the risks of such a trip. It’s a shame for such a beautiful place. I like Showa and Vintage, but the hotel needs a complete renovation, and the staff, especially the foreigners, need training. It would be a shame to see another abandoned hotel. Best regards.
