The staff were welcoming, and dinner was good, with fresh meat and fish. There are several kinds of onsen baths, including open-air and stone baths. It takes time to get to this area and you need a car, but once you’re here, it’s easy to settle into a calm, cozy stay surrounded by nature. I’d recommend it if you want the feel of a traditional Japanese Onsen Ryokan. Google calls it a “One Star hotel,” but based on my stay, that seems wrong. I’d put it at Three Stars or above.

There are lots of baths, including private ones, and the rooms are clean. The water temperature varies quite a bit, and the food was nice. I was hoping to have a cocktail in the lounge bar, but it was closed without any explanation. It seemed like quite a few amenities were shut because of a lack of customers and/or staff. There’s a large open smoking area right in the middle of the lobby, so walking through the lobby or stairwells means passing through thick tobacco smoke.

We paid around 30 000 yens for two people on a weekday, which felt very fair for the standard. The Japanese-style room looked out over the river, and dinner was served in a beautiful Japanese-style room. You sit on tatami for dinner, which might not be comfortable for foreign guests. Breakfast, by contrast, was in a Western-style room. Both meals were delicious and generous. The ryokan is set in the mountains of the gorgeous Nikko natural park. It’s clean, elegant and spacious, with three different onsens, two bars, a shop and several karaoke boxes.

The room and hallway were both really cold, and there was no Wi-Fi in the room. The only place with Wi-Fi was by the front desk. The food was repetitive, and the toilet was quite dirty.

A great place to unwind, with a lovely atmosphere, good onsen, food, and service. There wasn’t any staff who spoke fluent English.
